The D-xylose Test in Normal Persons and Patients with Digestive Diseases in Korea

Abstract
D-xylose test has been subject of much investigative mork of the primary malabsorptien syndrome
as trepical or no tropical sprue.
Recently it has also been treied in some of digestive diseases.
In the present study the author performed the D-xylose test in 109 normal persons and 120 patients
with digestive diseases.
The results obtained are as follows:
1) In 42 normal persons with 25gm oral dose:
(a) The mean blood level was 45.58¡¾10.53§·/100§¢ at the first hour after ingestion and a peak
level of 48.99¡¾10.63§·/100§¢ at the second hour.
The mean 5 hour urinary level was 5.69¡¾1.95gm
(b) in younger group, the peak blood level was 45.95¡¾12.30§·/100§¢ and the 5 hour urinary
value was 6.65¡¾1.84§·, while 50.85¡¾8.33§·/100§¢ of blood level and 4.58¡¾1.40gm of urinary
value in older group.
(c) It would thus be noted a tendency of slightly increasing blood level with decreased urinary
value in aged group.
2) In 67 normal subjects with 5gm oral dose, the mean 5 hour urinary level was 1.71¡¾0.22gm,
and this is also decreasing in older group.
3) Patients with peptic ulcer and pyloric stenosis (7 cases) showed a marked decrease of the Peak
blood level(28.35¡¾2.84§·/100§¢) and of the 5hour urinary value(3.69¡¾0.95gm); whereas patients
without pyloric stenosis (10 cases) showed normal blood level(50.76¡¾11.09§·/100§¢)and urinary
value(5.88¡¾1.36gm).
4) Patients with stomach cancer and pyloric stenosis (7 cases) showed also a marked decrease of
blood level (29.74¡¾4.21§·/100§¢) and of urinary value(50.95¡¾6.76§·/100§¢) and normal urinary
value(5.64¡¾0.77gm).
5) Patients with gall stone (13 cases) showed normal blood and urinary values, regardless of the
presence of jaundice.
6) Convalescent patients with hepatitis (5 cases) showed normal blood and urinary levels.
7) Patients with hepatoma and impaired liver function(5 cases) showed a marked decrease of blood
level (25.56¡¾1.66§·/100§¢) and of urinary value (3.47¡¾0.3gm); while patients with hepatoma
and normal liver fuction (5 cases) showed normal blood and urinary values.
8) Patients with liver cirrhosis and marked ascites (6 cases) showed a marked decrease of blood
level(31.57¡¾3.33§·/100§¢) and of urinary value(3.19¡¾0.59gm); while patients with liver cirrhosis
without ascites(15 cases) showed a mild decrease of blood level 38.7¡¾5.92§·/100§¢) and of urinary
value(4.29¡¾0.57gm).
9) In patients with pancreatic diseases, patients with chronic pancreatitis (9 cases) showed a mild
decrease of blood level(38.23¡¾11.87§·/100§¢) and of urinary value(4.64¡¾1.17gm); while patients
with pancreatic cancer (6 cases) showed a marked decrease of blood level (30.66¡¾6.49§·/100§¢)
and of urinary value (4.1¡¾0.88gm).
10) Patients with typhoid fever (12 cases) showed a mild decrease of blood level (37.95¡¾10.14§·
/100§¢) and of urinary value (4.03¡¾0.72gm).
11) Patients with intestinal tuberculosis (6 cases) showed a marked decrease of blood level (29.85
¡¾3.92§·/100§¢) and of urinary value (3.7¡¾0.61gm); while patients with colonic cancer (5 cases)
showed normal values.
